VIDEO: Children’s Hospital scheduled to welcome first patients in 2016

JOBURG - The Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital is set to become one of the five hospitals in Africa, dedicated to saving the lives of children and is scheduled to admit its first patients late 2016.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund hosted a tour at the construction site on the campus of the University of the Witwatersrand in Parktown as part of their Universal Children’s Day celebrations.

A panel discussion with school pupils between the ages of 10 and 17 was held, and the pupils shared their vision of a child-safe South Africa, as well as stories of their own challenges and struggles.

Deputy Chair of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust, Nana Magomola, said the hospital will be for children who have been transferred by doctors and require high care treatment.

“The hospital will be open to children with difficult areas to treat.It is also located near the University of Witwatersrand which is in a health care area,” explained Magomola.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital is a project initiated by the Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Fund, which was established by Nelson Mandela in 1995.

The specialised, 200-bed hospital is going to be the first of its kind in Johannesburg.

Magomola said, currently there are only four specialised children’s hospital on the African continent, and that the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital is going to have a huge impact in changing children’s lives.
