Road closures for Mercedes-Benz event in Sandton

PARKMORE – The intersection of William Nicol and Sandton drives will be shut down on 21 November for the Mercedes-Benz South Africa AMG Performance Tour in Sandton.

This according to Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for Metro police who said officers will be deployed to the area in order to divert traffic from the affected streets.

The other streets that will be affected include Argyle Avenue, Comartie Road, Marie Avenue and Sutherland Road. “Everything is in order and has been cleared by the City of Johannesburg,” added Minnaar.

However, Kate Wardle, deputy chairperson of the Parkmore Community Association, said the Parkmore community was not notified about the street closures. “People are already complaining about the traffic as well as the fencing and concrete blocks going up at the George Lea South Park,” she added. Wardle is also concerned about parking for attendees as well as the noise levels.

In a public letter to the Sandhurst community, Mercedes-Benz South Africa said noise levels will remain within legal limitations. The letter also stated that the organisers had engaged with the City and obtained all relevant permits to produce the event.

Phil Prinsloo from Eyethu Events said he has been hired by Mercedes-Benz South Africa to be the safety officer for the event. He explained, “I had not planned to do a door-to-door notification in Parkmore of this event as the impact on the suburb would be minimal, there was no malice or ill intend as we had focussed our attention on the Sandhurst area that is directly affected by the event.”

Mercedes-Benz is expected to offer free entertainment and displays for attendees. They have seized 2 300 metres of Sandton streets for their driving track and the event will run from 10am to 5pm.
