Pickpockets target shoppers at H&M store in Sandton

SANDTON – Shoppers at the newly-opened H&M store in Sandton were left shaken following the alleged theft of their valuables at the store.

This is according to a report by Timeslive which stated that a gang of eight allegedly targeted shoppers on 14 November, robbing them of them of their cellphones and other valuables.

According to two shoppers, Raeesa and Aadila Adamjee, the suspects allegedly walked towards them, crowding and pushing them.

“The thieves were so quick [and] the store was very crowded. We were walking down an aisle when a group of women walked towards us,” they said.

“Suddenly they were on top of us [and] when I tried to turn, a man was behind me, pushing me with his chest.”

The two added that the security personnel and management were not helpful during the incident and instead told them to keep their voices down.

Par Darj, manager of H&M South Africa, explained that the company could do little to prevent such incidents taking place at the store.

“We are aware of this problem but it is ultimately up to the customers to protect their belongings,” Darj said.

He added that the company had employed more guards and warned shoppers to look out for pickpockets.
