Shoddy work frustrates Klevehill Park residents

KLEVEHILL PARK – Residents in Klevehill Park are looking for answers from the City of Johannesburg following shoddy work done by contractors in the area.

According to one resident who wished to remain anonymous, workers arrived and closed off part of Nancy Road. “The workers proceeded to dig up concrete slabs, [resulting in] water gushing down Paddy Dones Lane, before they packed up and left,” the resident said.

The workers never returned and, despite the resident getting in touch with the various entities for answers, the mess remained on the road.

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, marketing and communications operations manager at Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), clarified that the issue on Nancy Road was a reinstatement matter. “[This means that] the relevant entity applies for a wayleave form with the JRA prior to making any changes to the road infrastructure,” she said.

“In granting the wayleave, the agency is cognizant of the work being undertaken by the specific entity in a particular area and after work has been completed, the same entity is then required to send a reinstatement order to the JRA.”

She further stressed that it was the responsibility of the relevant entity or contractor digging up the road to communicate their intentions to the agency through the correct channels.

Peters-Scheepers explained that those contractors who failed to follow procedure would have their tools and equipment confiscated by the Metro police Bylaw Enforcement Unit, until they paid a stipulated penalty which would then result in their tools and equipment being returned.

She assured residents that JRA inspectors would ensure the reinstatement was immediately undertaken. She urged residents to report road-related issues in their suburbs to the agency’s regional depot.
