Call to consider dread disease cover

JOBURG - With the major impact an illness such as cancer or health problems can have, consumers were given advice on the benefits of getting dread disease cover.

This from Wouter Fourie, a certified financial planner, who explained that this type of cover offered financial protection against illnesses such as a heart attack, cancer, stroke and Parkinson’s disease.

“This type of cover enables you to claim for financial assistance if you are afflicted by any of the dread diseases listed within the policy,” he said.

“It also covers injuries from accidents such as paraplegia, major burns and brain damage.”

Fourie added that this insurance also covered the cost of adaptation to a ‘new’ lifestyle, such as life in a wheelchair and the loss of insurability.

Despite this, he explained that it was not intended to cover for the loss of income and occupational disability due to dread disease. “It also does not indemnify the consumer against the cost of medical procedures or treatment,” he said.

Fourie concluded by offering consumers advice on the best way to go about getting dread disease cover, urging them to seek the help of a certified financial planner.

“It is important to consult widely and check with a competent, independent source that is not directly linked to one specific product… as this source would be ideally placed to review your financial needs and advise on the insurance cover that would be most appropriate for you,” he stressed.
