Discussion about Ballyclare begins

BRYANSTON - A public meeting was held at Bryneven Primary School on 28 October with Bryanston community members and the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to discuss the ins and outs of construction to be undertaken on Ballyclare Drive.

The meeting was organised by Ward 103 councillor, Vincent Earp, and included presentations from JRA regional manager, Vusi Sikhakhane, and engineer of the project, Clever Kativhu.

Sikhakhane expressed the ongoing stress caused by Ballyclare Drive. He said, “Without fail, over the past two years, this road has kept me awake at night. It is a high problem area.”

The basis of the construction focuses on two phases. The first includes the addition of a much-needed storm water drainage system from the area between St Audley Road and Ballina Road which will go down into the Braamfontein Spruit. The second phase will focus on widening Ballyclare Drive.

Kativhu said Ballyclare Drive has an existing storm water system that runs from William Nicol Drive to Bryneven Primary School. The project will see the development of a new system built off of the current one. Contractors will cut across the road and divert the system to the pavement across from the school and will run into the Braamfontein Spruit.

Kativhu added that the design of the new system will also accommodate the widening of the road which will take place at a later stage.

Project manager of the project, Jeffery Maluleke, said the purpose of the meeting was to create an ongoing stream of communication between the agency, contractors and the local community that would be affected. He added that the project will commence on 2 November and will end in March next year.

Head contractor of Buzaphi Construction, Prince Nematei, said the most important people are the residents and although there will be minimal disruptions during the project, there will be long-term benefits from the development.
