GP health department fails to pay workers

JOBURG - The Gauteng MEC for Health, Qedani Mahlangu, has apologised to newly-appointed community health workers, popularly known as CHWs, in the Johannesburg district for the department’s payment failure.

 

Mahlangu said she sincerely apologised to the CHWs who were not paid their deserved two month’s stipends. She said it must be noted that these dedicated CHWs play a significant role in the health system and, as such, the department cannot afford any delays in their compensation.

“We wish to inform them that, according to information at our disposal, there was a misunderstanding between Gauteng Department of Health and Department of Finance officials during the capturing… in the payroll system, consequently, payments of these newly-appointed CHWs were not processed accordingly,” Mahlangu said

The MEC has instructed that this glitch is urgently rectified and payment of the said employees be processed within a short space of time. She said there was an undertaking from all relevant stakeholders that this embarrassing situation and inconvenience to CHWs will never happen again.
