WATCH: Former Springbok releases gripping new book

JOBURG - Former Springbok wing and one of rugby’s much-loved players, Ashwin Wilemse, has released his gripping new book Rugby Changed My World: The Ashwin Willemse Story.

The book takes an intensely self-revealing look at the life of the 34-year-old. Willemse records his childhood pain and his adolescent descent into drugs and gangsterism with an astounding level of honesty.

After winning the U21 World Cup in 2002 with the Baby Boks, the hard-working winger made his debut for the Cats (now Golden Lions) in the same year.

He was included in the Springbok 2003 Rugby World Cup squad, and his achievements of 2003 are confirmed by the fact that he scooped the top three awards at the annual SA Rugby function – Player of the Year, Most Promising Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.

At the launch of his book in Johannesburg, Willemse said, “If I look at myself, I simply cannot ignore the impact that rugby has had on my life. It has been a point of direction, made me goal oriented. I owe a lot to rugby.”

The book is available at all Makro and CNA outlets nationwide, as well as online at takealot.com.
