SANDTON – Following the shocking structure collapse on the M1 highway which left two people dead and over a dozen others injured, Netcare Milpark confirmed that a number of the victims were treated at the hospital.

The collapse, which took place on 14 October, saw 21 victims injured with Anton Gillis, general manager at Netcare Milpark, confirming a number of those victims were admitted to the level 1 trauma unit following the incident.

“I can give my personal assurance… that they will receive the best possible care at Netcare Milpark Hospital,” he said.

“We were [also] approached with a number of requests from the media for information about the survivors who were admitted to the hospital and for interviews with them or their families, we conveyed these requests, however, they have chosen not to engage with the media,” he said.

Gillis also thanked Executive Mayor for Johannesburg, Parks Tau, and his team for the City’s support following the tragic bridge collapse, and said they were honoured to have worked with them in assisting the survivors.

Meanwhile, construction company, Murray & Roberts, confirmed that they had launched a formal investigation into the cause or causes of the collapse of the bridge support.

“This is in addition to other investigations that have been initiated by the Department of Labour, the City of Johannesburg, the police and other parties, with which Murray & Roberts is closely co-operating,” said spokesperson for the company, Eduard Jardim.

He added that the investigations would include analysis and research conducted by technical, engineering, legal and forensic specialists.

Furthermore, Jardim explained that the company was unable to comment on how long the investigations will take or when they will be concluded and he appealed to the public to await the outcome.

Gillis and Jardim concluded by expressing sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those who succumbed in the tragedy.
