Joy of Jazz brings a weekend of live jazz in Sandton

SANDTON – The 2015 Joy of Jazz was a big hit at the Sandton Convention Centre.

 

Guests gathered at the venue to enjoy a three-day special of live jazz from some of their favourite local and international jazz acts.

The 24-piece Amaqhawekazi Big Band kicked off festivities on the opening night which was also Heritage Day. The all-woman ensemble not only celebrated the history of women in jazz but also highlighted the voices of leading women in the contemporary world of jazz.

A special tribute was put together for Sibongile Khumalo and Letta Mbulu who are some of the leading jazz women in the country.

For the remainder of the three-day jazz spectacle, attendees also enjoyed the American fusion-jazz quartet, The Yellow Jackets featuring Bob Mintzer on saxophone, Dane Alderson on bass, Russell Ferrante on piano and William Kennedy on drums. Then there was Larry Carlton who brought his unique fusion of jazz, blues, pop and rock.

Marcus Miller, Jimmy Dludlu, Hugh Masekela and Simphiwe Dana also graced the stage. The night was one to remember for jazz lovers who were up on their feet during performances, having a feel-good time with their peers and enjoying the music.
