Noise and dust cause disturbance for Sandton residents

SANDTON – Sandton residents are feeling the effects of the dust and noise that comes from construction work within the area.

Following a number of complaints, residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the City of Johannesburg’s building regulations.

The following are some pertinent points:

  •  The owners of any land on which excavation work is in progress or any building that is being erected or demolished must institute precautions and follow regulations
  •  The building regulations state that no one is allowed to unreasonably disturb or interfere with the comfort of the neighbourhood during any construction. Any owner or person who contravenes a provision of this regulation shall be guilty of an offence
  •  No unreasonable disturbance is permitted on a Sunday, Good Friday, Ascension Day, Day of the Vow, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day
  •  On a Saturday, no unreasonable disturbance is permitted before 6am and after 5pm. On any other day of the week, no unreasonable disturbance is permitted before 6am and after 6pm.

However, these rules and regulations do not apply if there is an urgent need to contravene them in order to preserve the life, safety or health of any person. Also, these rules and regulations do not apply if there is a need to urgently preserve property, if the contravention has been authorised by a local authority or if it involves a public authority.

For any inquiries regarding building control, residents are advised to contact the City of Johannesburg directly.
