Sandton paddlers make a big splash

SANDTON – Junior members of Gauteng Canoe Union school league impressed with their recent performance at the winter marathon race on Germiston Lake which was hosted by the Victoria Lake Canoe Club.

Four of the union’s paddlers, all from St David’s Marist Inanda, did well in their respective categories with Connor Erwee placing first in the U12 race, and Nicholas Erwee, who place third in the U10 category.

Other impressive performances came from Connor Davies who placed second in the U18 event, and Peter Tumiel who managed an impressive third place in the U14 category.

Jennie Dallas, public relations officer at the Gauteng Canoe Union explained that paddlers between the ages of seven and 18 take part in the marathon and that points are earned on a sliding scale.

“Points earned on a sliding scale accumulate throughout the year for the prize-giving in November where schools are recognised for accumulated achievements from pupils represented,” she concluded.
