Wits keeps hopes alive at playoffs

JOBURG - Wits football team kept their hopes alive at the Varsity Football Cup playoffs when they defeated University of Pretoria (Tuks) 2-1 in a hard-fought victory.

Wonderboy Frank scored in the dying minutes of the game as Wits shocked the defending champions of the Varsity Football Cup on their home ground.

Wits had the first opportunity of the game with a free kick just outside the Tuks box, but no one got onto the end of the cross. At that stage, possession was fairly equal between the two teams as they were still settling into the game.

Tuks looked the more dominant team from the half-hour mark as the home crowd got behind them, and had two glorious opportunities to equalise but failed to convert.

With both teams squandering numerous chances in the final minutes, and just when the game looked like it was heading for a draw, Frank stepped up with a beauty of a shot to clinch the three points for the Clever Boys.

Wits coach Karabo Mogudi was happy with his team’s fighting spirit and hoped they could produce more such performances to secure a semifinal berth.

“It was a very tough game against Tuks and the victory has relieved a lot of pressure from us. We will have to win our next two games and continue with this momentum,” he said.
