Walking in unison

WANDERERS – When more than 37 000 people make their way to an event at 7am on a Sunday morning, one can be sure that it was an event very much worth while attending.

The Bidvest Unity Walk took place on 16 August, with thousands of Bidvest employees and their families being greeted by CEO Brian Joffe at the starting line to spur them on.

The walk was also held in Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, with a record-breaking 80 000 employees accompanied by family and friends from around the country walking in unison with one goal in mind: Raising awareness for people with disabilities.

Joffe made the ultimate pledge to the cause, just as he has done in prior unity walks, by committing to donate one wheel chair to the QuadPara Association of South Africa (Qasa), for every 75 employees who completed the walk.

Qasa strives to protect and promote the interests of people with mobility impairments in South Africa. Ari Seirlis, spokesperson for the association, exuded appreciation for the initiative by Bidvest. “We are extremely grateful that these Bidvest staff members have chosen to unite in a walk to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities.”

After the walk, attendees were treated to a meal and refreshments while being entertained by the likes of Cassper Nyovest.
