Opening Night invite for The Imagined Land

JOBURG - Auto & General Theatre on the Square owner, Daphne Kuhn, is proud to present a new South African play by Craig Higginson titled, The Imagined Land.

This play, which opens on 19 August, is fresh from the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown where it received rave reviews.

The plot revolves around a famous Zimbabwean novelist who is about to undergo brain surgery. Her daughter, a literary critic studying in America, is coming home to Johannesburg to take care of her.

A young biographer, originally from Zimbabwe, arrives at the front door requesting to write the biography of the woman who changed the course of his life.

Craig Higginson, who also wrote Dream of the Dog and The Girl in the Yellow Dress, returns with a new state of the nation play for the country’s troubled times. This gripping, witty, sexy, heady drama has echoes of the lives of Doris Lessing and Nadine Gordimer. It takes a look at relationships and evolves into a meditation on some of society’s central dilemmas.

Directed by former artistic director of the Market Theatre, Malcolm Purkey, this production features a dynamic cast including the legendary Fiona Ramsay as Bronwyn; and the newest, brightest stars in the theatre scene, Nat Ramabulana who plays the part of Edward; and Janna Ramos-Violante who plays Emily.

The play will transfer to the South African State Theatre later in the year.
