These reports follow weeks of disagreements between meter taxi and Uber drivers. The drivers have been concerned that Uber’s presence was making business difficult for them.

During the Metered Taxi Summit, MMC for Transport Christine Walters reassured meter taxi drivers that the matter would be escalated to Parks Tau, the Mayor of the City of Johannesburg.

Walters added that it was urgent to ensure that Uber was subject to the same regulatory dispensation as meter taxi operators to prevent unfair competition in the business.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for the Sandton police, said the alleged victims must open a case with the Sandton police.

“We can’t be expected to react on rumours,” he added.

“We have been monitoring the areas where meter taxis are operating and it has been quiet. We have not witnessed any other incidents.”
