Gautrain announces full mobile coverage

JOBURG - With the Gautrain going into its fifth year of operation, MEC for Roads and Transport, Dr Ismail Vadi said that tremendous progress has been made in the Gautrain cellular project.

Some commuters would have experienced the benefits of this advancement, but the official launch of the service will be widespread as of 3 July. There will be full mobile communication service coverage for Vodacom and MTN subscribers in the Gautrain underground at the Sandton, Rosebank and Park stations.

Vadi said, “Making these facilities available represents the first phase of a much broader engineering project which will see the installation of additional technical infrastructure that will extend across the entire Gautrain route.”

The next step of this project has begun as Gautrain attempts to make the coverage available along the tunnels and railway system.

“The Gautrain will continue striving to make better use of technology for the benefit of the Gautrain commuters,” Vadi said.

“This is one of the many system enhancements on the Gautrain that have been implemented to ensure that customer experience on the system is convenient, reliable and safe.”
