Another structural collapse at Sandton City

SANDTON - A structural collapse occurred at the Nelson Mandela Square section of Sandton City on the afternoon of 30 June.

 

Nelson Mandela Square management released a statement on behalf of JHI Properties, which manages the section of Sandton City where the incident took place.

CEO of JHI Properties Nomzamo Radebe said the incident took place at 12:15 pm. Radebe explained that a ceiling within a common area collapsed during construction work inside an empty store on the upper level.

“No customers were injured during the incident. Two construction workers suffered minor injuries and received care on site, ” Radebe said.  “Traffic control measures have, however, been put in place around that area to ensure the safety of shoppers.”

Nelson Mandela Square management added, “Nelson Mandela Square’s primary concern remains the safety of their shoppers and visitors to the centre.”

 

Sandton City suffered a previous structural collapse earlier this month when a portion of ceiling collapsed and injured a shopper. 

A friend of the shopper who was injured in the incident later spoke out on social media about Sandton City’s alleged lack of correspondence with the victim, however Sandton City denied this claim.
