Arnie back with sports festival

SANDTON - A FIRST of its kind on South African shores, the inaugural Arnold Classic South Africa sports festival is set to hit Sandton next year.

The festival, the brainchild of movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Lorimer, will take place at the Sandton Convention Centre from 27 to 29 May next year and will feature more than 42 sporting codes.

Michelle Price, one of the organisers of the event in the country said it would be exciting to finally have the festival in South Africa as it normally drew large crowds in countries such as the United States of America.

“The event is renowned in the international sports arena and the Arnold festival in the USA in March this year attracted 240 000 visitors, of which about 24 000 were athletes,” she said.

Price added that the festival would include a variety of local and international sporting codes, and would see bodybuilding legend Schwarzenegger attend too.

Some of the codes to be featured include martial arts, dancing, bodybuilding chess, table tennis, softball, baseball, cycling and aerobics.

“Another added attraction for the South African version of the festival includes the offer to local sporting codes to use the event as a platform for their regional or national championships, and we already have had an excellent response to this offer,” Price explained.

The festival takes place annually in the USA, Europe, Australia, Brazil and will also be launched in Malaysia in the upcoming year.

The festival was launched 27 years ago in Ohio, USA, by Schwarzenegger and Lorimer.
