Le Club re-opens for one night only

SANDTON – In what’s being called the alternative gig of the year, Joburg’s legendary Le Club will be re-opening at The Barnyard Theatre in Rivonia, for one night only on 23 May and it’s not to be missed!

Goth and indie-rockers should be heading to Sunninghill to catch The Awakening’s Ashton Nyte and No Friends Of Harry as they take centre stage to celebrate the Le Club/Decadence era. The cherry on top is definitely the fact that the clubs original DJ will spin the decks.

There are only a few live music spots that can claim to have a history as vibrant and connected as Jozi’s late-great Le Club. Guests can expect to hear classic modern rock, punk and some great indie music on the night.

Think back to a time when mobile phones had yet to see the light of day … those were the days when music lovers flocked to downtown Joburg to gig with goths and mods of all shapes, sizes and persuasions.

When Le Club was a bustling music spot, No Friends Of Harry were the biggest alternative band in the country. The country was rocking through a recession, coming to grips with a long-fought for democracy and partying up a storm every Friday and Saturday night thanks to incredible live music and even more memorable DJ sets from the likes of ASP Live Events owner, founding Le Club DJ Adrian Skirrow, and the undisputed DJ queen of Decadance, Kim Saville.

The event on 23 May will celebrate an era and a reunion for music veterans, who can dust off their eight-up Docs and squeeze into stove-pipe jeans and party the night away to great, old music. “It’s a bit of fun that’s been a long time coming. Pure passion is what’s behind re-opening Le Club for a single night, one that’ll see the likes of éVoid, Petit Cheval and Wonderboom drummers Danny de Wet performing as he fronts his gothic/alternative ’80s tribute show ‘Hey Now, HEY NOW NOW’ tribute band, while Kim and Adrian will also hit the decks and deliver the finest indie rock and pop Le Club was famous for playing,” event organiser and music industry stalwart Adrian Skirrow said.

The line-up for the evening includes Danny de Wet, who will be joined by lead vocalist, Dave Beretta Owens of Lithium & N8tive fame, as well as the one-time Cavalier Jay Wilton. No Friends of Harry will perform for the first time in 16 years while The Awkening’s Ashton Nyte will unpack his classic hits and also introduce fans to tracks from his brand new album Some Kind Of Satellite and to top it all off, Kerry-Anne Allerston, host of The Hang Out on Mix 93.8 FM, will infuse some current musical currency into the night’s magical mix.

Le Club will re-open at The Barnyard Theatre in Rivonia on 23 May. The show starts at 8pm and tickets cost R175.
