Sunny picnic fun in Maroeladal

MAROELADAL – Local non-profit organisation, the Red Ladies, hosted a fundraiser with a difference in honour of ReWild Rehabilitation Centre recently at Camdeboo Farm.

Craft beer, gourmet sandwiches and picnic blankets was the order of the day on 19 April and those in attendance basked in the hazy Sunday afternoon sun while enjoying the company of family and friends.

Red Ladies representative, Eve Langkilde, explained that the organisation consists of a group of close friends who strive to support as many charities as they possibly can. “It’s a big responsibility, so we all try to share the load.

“We select the charities we will support at the beginning of each year and apart from donating from our own pockets to different charities every month, we also host four active fundraisers a year, this one is the first for 2015.”

Langkilde explained that they chose ReWild, based near the Kruger Park in Phalaborwa, because of the great work they do with wildlife rehabilitation. “We felt very strongly, especially with all the urbanisation going on, that any charity who looks after wild animals and rehabilitating them is extremely important, so that future generations can also enjoy seeing wildlife like we do.”

Founder of ReWild, Jane Burd, is also one of South Africa’s leading bat experts and rehabilitators, and she regularly works with FreeMe in Paulshof.

“Seeing as we are right on the border of Kruger National Park, we get a lot of wildlife that needs rehabilitation,” said Burd.

“We are very, very grateful for the fundraiser and the assistance we are getting from the Red Ladies,” Burd continued. “They have been absolutely amazing. The funds will be used to build new cages on a private game reserve just outside Phalaborwa for the soft releases of smaller animals. We are also working on a monitoring project for our hand reared animals who have been released to see how well they integrate back into the wild.”

The Red Ladies wanted to thank all their kind sponsors, Camdeboo Farm, Copperlake Breweries, Fresh Earth Bakery, Paddies Pub, and the DJ’s, Alan Murphy and Otto de Vries, who all made the day a resounding success.
