Sandton CPF elections kick off

SANDTON - The Sandton Community Policing Forum will hold their Elective General Meeting.

This will take place at the end of June, and the current chairperson of the forum, Wendy Vorster-Robertson, wants to get the community ready.

She said the Sandton precinct elections will take place on 24 June this year. “I urge the community to come forward and actively assist in the fight against crime in the precinct,” she said. “Without community support it is impossible to win the war against crime. Sandton is the financial heartbeat of Africa, and as such, must take its rightful place on the international map. To accomplish that, the Sandton community needs to stand firm and lead by example.”

She explained that, prior to the elections at station or precinct level, the sub-forum elections within the four sectors in the community must take place first. She said the elected station executive committee consists of a chairperson, deputy chairperson, secretary, deputy secretary, treasurer and a public relations officer.

Vorster-Robertson also said the station forum board will consist of two elected representatives from each sector, plus a minimum of seven additional members from the community.

She explained that the nominees will consist of residents, people who own property, or who are employed within the respective station policing precinct and/or sector.

“After elections the term of service will then be five years,” she added.

Vorster-Robertson went on to explain that people not eligible to hold elected positions within the forum include:

•Serving employees of the various law enforcement agencies

•Police reservists

•Owners or employees of security companies

•Persons with a criminal record after 27 April 1994

•Persons under 18 years of age

•Non-citizens of South Africa

•Persons holding political positions in public office and employees of the provincial secretariat for the police service and/or responsible for police oversight.

“All members serving on the forum executive and management committees must undertake finger-printing and security clearance prior to holding office,” added Vorster-Robertson.

She explained that the forum is mandated to, inter alia, establish and maintain public and private participation between the community and the police. “We are to assist the police in identifying and meeting the needs of the community,” she said. “We are here to improve the transparency and accountability of the police to the community.”
