Mayor to promote cycling

ALEXANDRA - Alex will celebrate this year's Human Rights Day through a Freedom Ride on Cycle Jozi Week to take place 17th to 22nd March.

Many Alex residents will celebrate this year’s Human Rights Day by participating in the Freedom Ride.

The ride is part of Cycle Jozi Week from 17 to 22 March and will be from Alex to Sandton. Last year about 4 000 cyclists took part in the ride from Nelson Mandela Bridge to Soweto.

Organisers said the event aims to promote Joburg as a cycle-friendly city, with the long-term goal of promoting cycling as an alternative form of transport to improve traffic congestion, and to reduce carbon emissions for a more eco-friendly city.

The event will also promote the ongoing construction of dedicated cycle lanes and sidewalks between Alexandra and Sandton. The ride will be led my Mayor Parks Tau who is a keen cyclist.

The MMC for Transport, Christine Walters said the city council supported cycling organisations and activists. The council will also introduce initiatives to make bicycles more available to disadvantaged communities, and will launch bike sharing and rental schemes to promote its use.
