Police thwart land invasion in Buccleuch

BUCCLEUCH - In what appears to be a resurgence of attempted land invasions, residents have stopped land invaders in their attempt to set up shacks in the area.

The drama unfolded on 12 February when a resident of Buccleuch spotted shacks being erected in an open space close to the suburb.

According to Andrew McMurray, also a Buccleuch resident, the police and Metro police were alerted to the incident immediately.

“The Metro police and Sandton police arrived, proceeded to halt the move and removed the invaders from the area,” he said.

“The Buccleuch community would like to thank [the] police and Metro police for their speedy, efficient and faultless intervention into this matter.”

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the Metro police, confirmed that 10 shacks were in the process of being put up when the police arrived.

The police then managed to thwart the process and removed the illegal invaders from the area.

A similar incident also took place in Marlboro, when residents reported the arrival of trucks filled with people and goods.

According to a resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, the truck offloaded the people at the Marlboro stadium, with their parcels and without the community’s knowledge.

Lillian Kekana of Ward 109 confirmed the incident and said there were attempts to resolve the matter.

Minnaar explained that such cases were common when there is an open space.

“In such situations, people see an open space and try to set up their shacks there and make it their home,” he said.

Minnaar also advised residents to contact the police immediately should they come across a land invasion and to always be on the lookout.
