Ghost Unit to clean up Joburg
JOHANNESBURG - Following an increase in smash and grabs, hijackings and unsolicited car window washing, the Metro police will have officers in unmarked vehicles all over Johannesburg to clean up the streets.
Operation Ke Molao was announced on 11 February and will involve Metro police officers in unmarked vehicles patrolling around Johannesburg. Spokesperson for the Metro police Wayne Minnaar said, “The operation will commence from 12 February and will involve six ‘ghost cars’ working across Johannesburg in an attempt to combat the growing problems involving smash and grabs, hijackings and window washers.”
According to reports, Sello Lemao of the Mayoral Committee of Community Safety said these activities are not only illegal according to both national traffic and criminal legislation, but are also illegal in respect of city bylaws.
He added that increases in these crimes at road intersections have turned Johannesburg motorists into sitting targets for theft, assault, robbery and harassment.
Mukondi Tshikalange from the office of the MMC concluded that the operation will work in conjunction with the current free way unit operated by the Metro police.
