Video shines a light on ‘smash-and-grabbers’

JOBURG - A video profiling the smash-and-grab endemic in and around the Sandton area has been making the rounds on Facebook.

In the video, points of view are put forward by a smash-and-grab victim, Bryanston resident and founder of eBlockwatch group Andre Snyman and a Metro police woman. The video also features an interview with a self-proclaimed ‘smash-and-grabber.’

Snyman explained that criminals prefer to conduct smash-and-grab attacks while motorists are sitting on ramps connected to the highway system in Sandton and other Johannesburg areas.

The Metro police officer in the video outlines the problems involved in arresting these criminals. She explained that due to a lack of material evidence it was very difficult to charge a smash-and-grab thief with a criminal offence.

This website has reported on many smash-and-grab incidents, most notably the video of a smash-and-grab which took place on Cambridge Road by Witkoppen Road which was filmed on a motorists dashcam and loaded onto YouTube in January.

This website has also reported on smash-and grab-hotspots to watch out for.
