Two arrested, two at large in Summit Road shooting

SANDTON - A suspect and two members of the public sustained injuries in an attempted hijacking and accident on the corner of Summit Road and Kelvin Drive on the afternoon of 3 February.

Sandton police spokesperson Captain Kym Cloete said at around 2.45pm, Sandton police detectives were busy with undercover patrols when they spotted a suspicious white Ford Ranger in Bryanston.

She said when police turned around, the suspects immediately accelerated and fled. The police then pursued the suspects and the suspects fired shots at them. Police then returned the fire.

“At the corner of Kelvin Drive and Summit Road, the suspects had an accident and jumped out of their vehicle,” said Cloete.

She said that two suspects hijacked a Toyota Avanza and fled the scene, while the other two were arrested by police. Cloete added that one suspect was injured in the shootout as well as two members of the public.

Cloete explained that the suspects assaulted a motorist while attempting to hijack the vehicle and a second person was injured in the car accident with the suspects.

“Two members of the public’s vehicles and one police vehicle were damaged,” said Cloete.

Sandton police have also confirmed that the suspects’ Ford Ranger was a stolen vehicle. They are suspected to have been involved in an alleged house robbery in Bryanston.

Two of the suspects are still at large.
