German school celebrates 125 years

JOBURG - The Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg (DSJ) is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.

The institution is the oldest co-educational school in Johannesburg and was established in 1890 by Pastor Hermann Kuschke.

It was originally located on Edith Cavell Street in Hillbrow and was moved to its current premises in Parktown in 1969.

The modern day DSJ caters to German speaking pupils of all age groups ranging from toddlers to teenagers.

The school is proud of its high academic standards and well-rounded graduates.

In 2003, the school amended its name from the Deutsche Schule Johannesburg to the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg, in order to correctly reflect the multiracial and multinational composition of the teachers, pupils and parents who collectively represent over 30 different nationalities within the school.

For more than 25 years, DSJ has actively made provision for previously disadvantaged children from Grade 5 onwards.

The DSJ is unlike any other school in the Johannesburg area as it offers the best of both German and South African educational standards.

Pupils have the choice between the South African IEB school leaving certificate and the German International Abitur.

To celebrate its 125th anniversary, the school will host a ‘Festwoche’ or Festival Week from 11 to 18 September this year.

Prospective parents and pupils are invited to attend the school’s open day on 7 March.
