Honouring the top cops of Sandton

SANDTON - The Sandton police honoured their top cops at the Johannesburg Country Club in Woodmead on 2 February.

Brigadier Alan Billings opened the Top Cops Awards ceremony with words of encouragement. He said there was still a great task at hand for the Sandton police. “We must increase visibility,” he added. “We expect nothing less than the best from our team.”

Billings thanked the police officers, security personnel and the Sandton Community Policing Forum for their efforts towards working together and fighting crime in the community. He was joined by Wendy Vorster-Robertson, the chairperson of the Sandton Community Police Forum in handing over the awards.

Constables Sindisa Nkuna and Frans Lebelo were awarded for their Vispol Operational police work regarding a business robbery in Sandton. “The members responded immediately after they were called to attend to a business robbery at a store,” explained Billings. “The suspects were still in the store and started firing at the police officers when they arrived. The police returned fire.” Billings said one suspect was immediately apprehended and an unlicensed firearm was recovered. The second suspect was arrested later.

Warrant officers Gideon Louw and Delson Magoro, sergeants Solder Mgiba, Langalakhe Buthelezi and Deon Hendricks, and constables Matome Lebea, Oliver Stollarz and Albert Loffler were all awarded for their detective work of tracing and arresting 31 wanted suspects for the period between October and December last year.

Constable Ednah Malaka was also awarded for her police work within the Vispol Operational sector. “This member was dedicated to her job and very professional,” added Billings.
