Informal market develops outside Bryanston Pikitup garden refuse site

BRYANSTON - The Pikitup Bryanston Garden Refuse Site has become a cause for concern for residents living in the area.

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp has received a number of complaints from Bryanston residents who are concerned about the apparent deteriorating state of affairs developing outside the site.

Illegal vendors are seen on the pavement selling goods, people are loitering looking for jobs, while others are waiting along the pavements for potential customers during the day to sell the goods collected from the site. Vagrants are also sleeping along the wall of the site making fires at night, urinating on the walls and playing cards are some of the issues raised.

Earp said he has spoken to the regional manager of Pikitup about the site which is located on the corner of William Nicol and Ballyclaire drives. “I have also e-mailed the Metro police and urban management at Region E,” he added.

“The situation with the illegal vendors and vagrants cannot be allowed to continue.”

He said he also requested Pikitup to facilitate the cleaning of the site which is also in a dismal condition. “Part of the perimeter wall has collapsed,” he explained.

“Residents are tired of seeing washing drying on the bushes in full view of vehicles in traffic. I have also asked the urban inspector to log the complaints at the regional office. The City of Johannesburg must start applying its own regulations and bylaws.”

Earp also said it was Metro police’s responsibility to remove the vendors taking over the sidewalk. “Pikitup also needs to ensure that their perimeter at the garden site is properly maintained.”

No comment was received from Pikitup or the Metro police by the time of publication.

Concerned resident, Anita Canada who alerted the Sandton Chronicle in an e-mail said the situation at the site was getting worse. She wrote, “Could everyone work together on this and put pressure on those responsible. I do hope that Pikitup takes responsibility for their site and takes all the necessary steps to secure it. The Metro police need to regularly patrol the area.”
