Recyclable goods dumped along the spruit

SANDTON - Concerned resident, Thomas Endrody is bothered by the illegal dumping of recyclable materials along the Braamfontein Spruit.

“I would urge people to rather put their plastic waste with the normal rubbish because that way it is more environmentally friendly than littering on our spuit and nature trail,” said Endrody.

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp said he had complained to Pikitup and City Parks regarding the problem. “I have yet to get a positive response and positive action,” added Earp.

In response, Jacky Mashapu, spokesperson for Pikitup said they established that there were two bags that were discovered on the cycling trail and the bags were filled with recyclable waste collected by informal recyclers who also informally reside along the spruit. “The recyclers collect recyclable material from households, retain them next to their sleeping place with the intention of selling them,” explained Mashapu.

“It’s unfortunate that this consignment was left unattended. However, Pikitup is thus exploring ways of integrating and educating the recyclers or informal traders on how to dispose their recyclables in an environmentally friendly manner.”

Mashapu added, “We urge residents to be the ambassadors of their environments by reporting any irregular activities like illegal dumping to the police or contact the City of Johannesburg’s 24-hour toll-free hotline.”
