Pride: Gay and proud for a cause

Pride is more drama than comedy or maybe I just need to sharpen up on my '80s British humour.

The movie is inspired by a true-life story in 1984, when Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was in power and the National Union of Mineworkers was on strike. A group of gay and lesbian activists identify their struggle of acceptance and tolerance with that of the miners and decide to raise money to support the strikers’ families.

After being snubbed by the union, the homosexual group identifies a small mining village and sets off to make their donation to them in person.

While the strike continues, the two groups discover that their union has made the strongest union of all.

The movie brilliantly epitomises the ’80s British culture with the use of the soundtrack and the fashion of the day. Throughout the film I felt like the production would have been that much better had it been a musical such as the 2005 film, Rent or the 2012 Les Misérables.

Pride is a feel-good movie about unity, human rights and the tolerance of one another. Two unlikely groups of society come together under a common cause and find out they are more alike than different.

Watch this movie for the heart-felt drama and the inspiring storyline. Do not watch this movie if you expect to laugh out loud, unless your British humour is sharp.

The movie is expected to be released in South African cinemas in February next year.
