Brand new mobile library for school

BENMORE - Book drive efforts by Varsity College Sandton, Pretoria and Midrand campuses has led to a brand new mobile library for Ema Primary School.

Pupils from the school were very proud recipients of the library. The handover of the mobile library was part of the Masixhasane Literacy Project.

“Community Engagement is an integral part of Varsity College, and hosting various fundraising activities to purchase this mobile library was an immensely rewarding effort on the part of the Varsity College staff and students,” said Vasanthee Govender, student relations manager of Varsity College Sandton. “The aim is to generate a passion for reading and to eradicate illiteracy among disadvantaged schools and rural communities.”

The mobile library consists of 800 curriculum related books, a television, a DVD player and educational CDs.

Govender said what makes the library unique is that it is mobile and can be wheeled to any classroom when the need arises. Also, the library can be locked for security purposes.

The handover was also an opportunity for the Varsity College team to explain to the children the importance of reading. Govender said, “The importance of empowering the mind with knowledge offered by books was stressed to the learners and they ensured the Varsity College team that they will make good use of the library.”

The principal of the school, Lydia Molelekeng said, “The library will be a legacy that will remain with the school long after we have left. Ema Primary School has been without a proper library infrastructure for many years.”

Varsity College has since donated over 2 000 books to the school.
