Domestic Watch Forum celebrates a successful year

HURLINGHAM - The Domestic Watch Forum celebrated the end of a wonderful year with a special end-of-year function at the Rosebank Union Church on 20 November.

Co-ordinator of the Domestic Watch Forum Penny Steyn said, “The year-end function is the climax to a year of inspiring and training domestics and gardeners on how to prevent crime, and how to pass on information without putting their lives in jeopardy.”

With all in attendance in a celebratory mood, and dancing and singing in the main auditorium of the Rosebank Union Church, there was happiness all around as domestics, gardeners and representatives from the police, community policing forums, residents’ associations and various sponsors rejoiced in the end of a successful year.

The theme for the function was ‘The good news story’ and Steyn added, “And the event was just that with absolutely exceptional support from vast numbers of people. During the year, I had so many of “my” people come quietly and humbly to me to tell me their amazing bravery and successes in preventing shocking crime, and actually being instrumental in capturing criminals.”

The function also hosted special guests Major General Phumzo Gela of the police and managing director of ADT Clive Humphrey’s who paid thanks to Steyn and the Domestic Watch Forum’s exemplary work throughout the year. Major General Gela said, “I’m here to appreciate and acknowledge the great work these watchers have done. Policing is not about wearing a uniform or having the training, but it all starts in our households.”

Clive Humphrey’s of ADT, who has worked in conjunction with the Domestic Watch Forum for many years, said “Today is just the culmination of the year’s work and a celebration of the people who have been involved.”

While everyone celebrated the end of a successful year, Steyn remained optimistic for next year saying, “There is no doubt that lessons will continue next year starting in January. I have written 68 lessons and I must share these with the world, each person gets a lesson hand out at each meeting, I will also be opening new suburb meetings. I have to, I am driven and determined that the people on the ground must continue to play an integral part in the crime challenge.”
