Sandton police make a boy’s dream come true

SANDTON - Little Themba Makhubela finally realised his dream to become a policeman when he visited the Sandton Police Station.

The six-year-old from Polokwane got this exclusive privilege through Reach For a Dream, who organised and took Makhubela and his mother on a tour of the station.

Maggie Maila, a field worker at Reach For A Dream, explained the reason behind bringing Makhubela, suffering from a cardiac condition, to the police station.

“Our organisation focuses on fulfilling children’s dreams and when Makhubela expressed his desire to visit a police station, we went out of our way to make it come true for him,” she said.

Maila explained that she initially met Makhubela at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, where he was battling tetralogy of fallot, and after an assessment, was placed on the organisation’s list.

This meant that Makhubela would get his dream fulfilled and indeed he got to experience the work done by the police through his tour, which included a visit to the charge office, the holding cells and a ride in a police car.

Makhubela also received a multitude of gifts from both the Sandton Community Police Forum and Reach For A Dream.

Sandton police spokesperson, Captain Kym Cloete, said the station was always happy to assist Reach For A Dream in their work as they had a good working relationship.

She also said taking Makhubela on a tour was a noble act and a message that “children should not be afraid of the police, we are here to help and it is always a joy to be around a child who loves you back”.

The visit to the police station took place on 19 November and was organised by the Sandton Community Police Forum and Reach For A Dream.
