Pikitup warns against giving waste collectors gifts

JOBURG - The festive season tends to evoke a spirit of giving, but Pikitup has urged the public not to give waste removal staff Christmas gifts.

Ahead of the holiday season, Pikitup’s acting managing director Suren Maharaj warned residents and business owners against individuals who masqueraded as Pikitup staff requesting Christmas boxes and donations from the public.

“Pikitup employees are forbidden from soliciting Christmas gifts from members of the public, as this goes against company policy for staff to take part in this tradition,” said Maharaj.

“Residents are under no obligation whatsoever to offer any gifts to Pikitup’s refuse collection staff, as the company does pay a bonus to its staff at the end of the year.”

The public were urged to report impostors and staff who approach or harass them for gifts or donations to the police or to the city council’s 24-hour toll-free hotline on 0800 00 25 87.

Alternatively, incidents should be reported via e-mail to anticorruption@tip-offs.com or SMS 32840 at a cost of R1.50.

Residents that had further queries should contact Joburg Connect on 011 375 5555 or 086 056 2874 or visit the municipal waste services’ website at visit www.pikitup.co.za.
