Let there be light

SANDTON - Innovative, appealing and energy efficient, The Eskom 2014 Energy Efficient Lighting Design competition recognised designers as the finalists in the competition were announced.

Eskom honoured the bright sparks for their unique and innovative lighting designs at a breakfast hosted in Strathavon.

The award ceremony saw students, professionals and pupils honoured for their extraordinary inventions.

Andrew Etzinger, the senior general manager: integrated demand management, Eskom, gave a keynote address, explaining the purpose of the design competition.

“The vision behind the competition was to organise an energy efficient lighting design competition that would not only become a leading competition in South Africa, but would also compare favourably with international standards,” he said.

Also present at the award ceremony was Barry Bredenkamp, portfolio manager at the South African National Energy Development Institute, who said the competition was a way to celebrate South African talent.

“The lighting design competition is a way, not only to celebrate passion, but also innovation and is a way to salute some of South Africa’s best designers,” he said.

A total of 506 entries were received for the competition, with six finalists being announced in the three categories; student, professional and learner.

Ashley Adami of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, emerged as the winner of the student category with his Nimbus design.

In the professional category, Stephen Pikus, was announced as the winner for his design, Bright Spark, while the winner for the third category was Megan Laughton, a matric pupil of Stellenberg High for her Shredded Lantern design.

All the winners received prize money for their effort while each finalist received various prizes for their achievement.
