Family fun day unites Parkmore community

PARKMORE - The Parkmore Community Association hosted their first annual Family Fun Day which took place at the Shandon Way Park in Parkmore.

To mark the launch of the community initiative, the association presented a R10 500 cheque to the family of Maria Mahlaela, the domestic worker who was murdered during a house robbery in Parkmore.

Kate Wardle, the association’s deputy chairperson said Mahlaela’s family was very appreciative of the money as she was the sole bread winner in the family.

“It is time to reclaim our spaces,” added Wardle. “This is a beautiful area that we could use more often. I am hopeful that, working closely with City Parks, we can ensure that play equipment is installed in the park in the next year.”

The association chairman, Julian Ortlepp welcomed everyone to the park and the fun day. The event was attended by over 100 local residents. There was food and refreshments as well as jumping castles and face painting for the children. “The Balloon Stop on 11th Street provided bunches of balloons to add to the atmosphere,” added Wardle.

The fun day had various sponsors within the community that supported the day’s events. Ford Fury sponsored the jumping castles and Spar sponsored the meat for the braai.

“A fantastic community day organised by enthusiastic volunteers and a great way to relax on a hot summer’s day,” said Wardle. “We are looking forward to next year already.”
