On the road to repair

SANDTON - Several roads in Sandton and surrounding areas are set for an overhaul as Johannesburg Roads Agency outlined multi-million rand plans to repair the city's roads.

The roads agency was investing R190 million on road resurfacing for the current financial year following a Visual Condition Index conducted last year to establish the condition of the city’s 13 428km of road network.

The resurfacing programme commenced last year with a total expenditure of R140 million, and roads in parts of the city, including Rosebank CBD and Midrand had already been resurfaced.

However, the roads agency clarified that not all roads in need of resurfacing would be addressed this year.

“If your road is still not on the road list, please rest assured [that] over the next three years, if your road needs resurfacing, it will be on future lists,” said the roads agency’s managing director Skhumbuzo Macozoma.

Roads that would be addressed this financial year included:

  •  Fifteenth Street (Marlboro)
  •  Central Avenue (Atholl)
  •  South Avenue (Atholl)
  •  Cross Avenue (Atholl)
  •  Froome Street (Atholl Ext 1)
  •  Ilkley Road (Atholl Ext 1)
  •  Dennis Road (Atholl Ext 1)
  •  Heather Avenue (Atholl Ext 1)
  •  Riverside (Atholl Ext 1)
  •  Athol Oaklands (n) (Abbotsford)
  •  Athol Oaklands (s) (Abbotsford)
  •  Athol Oaklands Road (Abbotsford)
  •  Third Street (Abbotsford)
  •  Benmore Road (Benmore Gardens)
  •  Short Road (Benmore Gardens)
  •  Shrublands Drive (Dalecross)
  •  Harris Road (Barlow Park)
  •  First Street (Alexandra Ext 63)
  •  Eleventh Street (Alexandra Ext 45)
  •  Hillman Street (Woodmead)
  •  Humber Street (Woodmead)
  •  Riley Road (Woodmead)
  •  Wolseley Street (Woodmead)

The roads agency did not provide a definitive timeline for the commencement and completion of resurfacing but asked the public to bear with them during the road works.

“My big plea… to the citizens of the city, is to please work with us. Now that we are sharing information with you, please hold us accountable and reprimand us if we don’t deliver on what we have committed. Please work with us so we are able to deliver on our mandate.” Macozoma said.

The roads agency encouraged residents to report road and storm water issues to 0860 562 874/ hotline@jra.org.za or on twitter @MyJra
