End in sight for water shortages

JOBURG - Areas that have been running dry for days due to water shortages are expected to have their supply restored next week.

“There is a plan put in place by Rand Water indicating the possibility of areas having water by Monday [29 September],” said Joburg Water spokesperson Millicent Kabwe.

Currently, two suburbs in Joburg – South Hills and Rabie Ridge – remained without water and others were affected by a low water supply.

Kabwe dismissed earlier speculation that the water shortages were due to municipalities failing to pay their bills.

“From Joburg Water’s side that is merely an allegation; the current water shortages have nothing to do with payment issues,” Kabwe said.

Meanwhile, Rand Water was set to meet with Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane today (26 September) over water shortages in parts of Gauteng.

“The Rand Water Board has already reported that the main cause of the interruptions could be pinned down to the ageing infrastructure, vandalism, as well as a power supply shortage to pump water upstream into reservoirs to supply the affected communities,” the minister’s spokesperson, Brenda Mpitsang said in a statement.

Engineering teams from the affected areas’ municipalities had been working around the clock, together with Rand Water, to resolve the problem, Mpitsang added.
