Bryanston stabbing suspect still needs assessment

BRYANSTON - The man accused of stabbing his wife 50 times at a Bryanston office park is yet to undergo medical examination.

Pillay appeared in Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 30 September.

Senior state prosecutor at Randburg Magistrate’s Court Eric Mushanei said said the accused, Yengesen Pillay was number 109 on the waiting list for a bed at Sterkfontein Hospital in order to undergo psychiatric evaluation.

In the meanwhile, Pillay has been awaiting evaluation in the medical section of the Johannesburg Prison.

Magistrate Anja Hambroc postponed the case to 2 December in order for Pillay to be examined before the case resumes.

30 September, 8.30am:

The suspect accused of stabbing his wife 50 times in Bryanston, Yengesen Pillay, will appear at Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 30 September.

Pillay will appear after a 30-day psychiatric evaluation called for by the court. This followed an attempted suicide while Pillay was in police custody following his arrest in Pietermaritzburg on 19 August.

The suspect’s initial court date on 20 August was postponed to 28 August where Senior State Prosecutor Yusuf Baba finalised the arrangements for his psychiatric evaluation, and Pillay was subsequently sent for an assessment at Sterkfontein Hospital.

Police spokesperson, Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng, said Pillay was arrested by police on 19 August in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, following the murder of a woman, identified by the police as Shareen Pillay, and believed to be the suspect’s wife.

He added, “The suspect was on the run following the murder of a woman on [16 August] on the corner of Peter Place and Karen Street in Bryanston.”

The victim was found in the grounds of a Bryanston office complex. A security guard at the complex said the suspect worked there and alleged that Pillay killed the victim inside the office building before leaving her body outside. This was, however, unconfirmed by police.

A motorist saw her body and alerted paramedics to the incident. ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaark, said she was barely responsive when paramedics arrived at the scene. He said she later died at Mediclinic Sandton after substantial blood loss.
