Junior Colleges plant herbs

SUNNINGHILL - The pupils of Junior Colleges Sunninghill celebrated spring by planting their own 'herb hangers' on 16 September.

The pupils were asked to bring their own seedlings or herbs and plastic two litre bottles. They then filled the bottles with soil and planted their herbs,

Grade 00 teacher Bianca Leathers said, “The children absolutely loved getting their hands dirty and had so much fun planting their own herbs. But the event also taught them so much about the environment around them.”

From cabbages to spinach leaves the children learnt about planting herbs and how to look after them. The herbs were then hung along the pathways in front of the class rooms.

“Herbs also offer children a unique learning tool through their multiple sensory characteristics from fabulous fragrances and tastes to wonderful textures and visual traits,” said Liz Steenkamp from Junior Colleges Sunninghill.
