Youth to step up in business

SANDTON - The matric students from S'godiphola, Phomolong and Tsosoloso Ya'Afrika secondary schools were treated to a special screening of the business education film Step up 2 a Start Up.

It was held at Ster Kinekor in Sandton City with the Minister of Small Business Development, Lindiwe Zulu in attendance.

Produced by Primestars Marketing, the film’s screening acted as the first step of the educational programme of the same name which will promote entrepreneurship among the youth of South Africa.

Managing director of Primestars Marketing and brainchild behind Step up 2 a Start up, Martin Sweet said, “If we are to succeed in fostering entrepreneurship in South Africa, we must present it as a viable option at school level, along-side other career choices. Waiting until learners finish matric may be too late.”

The students were treated to popcorn and cold drinks and interacted with the stars of Step up 2 a Start up and Zulu.

CEO of Primestars Marketing Roger Jarden said a programme that taught young people the importance of entrepreneurship was integral in a country struggling with unemployment such as South Africa.

After the screening, pupils received an entrepreneur toolkit designed to help them mould their own business ideas. They will then be given the chance to showcase their idea at the Step Up 2 A Start Up National Youth Competition. Winners of the competition will be sent to the Step Up 2 A Start Up Entrepreneurs Boot camp where they will be further mentored about the ins and outs of entrepreneurship. An awards ceremony acknowledging the best efforts of the pupils will conclude the programme.

Executive chairperson of the National Youth Development Agency, Yershen Pillay said, “Young people cannot become self-sustaining entrepreneurs without the necessary guidance, skills and education which they can now access before even leaving school through the Step up 2 a Start Up initiative. As the National Youth Development Agency we are tremendously proud to be a key sponsor of this great initiative.”
