Spreading the art of parkour

SANDTON - The Concrete Foundation Crew is a club which hosts parkour workshops.

Parkour is a form of training developed in France in the ’80s. Trainer Dyllon Davidson said that the discipline involves the use of motion to get from one point to another in the most efficient manner possible.

At these workshops, top parkour athletes from all over the country educate people about the social and health benefits of parkour.

The movements involve swinging, vaulting and jumping among others through a collection of obstacles. Concrete Foundation Crew set up their workshops at George Lea Park, and teach people of all ages this holistic discipline.

Davidson said, “The club is a place of learning. We teach people from young children to people in their 40s and 50s functional parkour and how to use their bodies in unison, in the high impact environment around them.”

Established in 2008 by a few friends experienced in the art of parkour, they all used their collective skills to teach people, not only the flashy aspects of the discipline seen all over the world, but also in the foundational elements which aid everyone in body conditioning and all-round health.

Davidson, who is also one of the original founders, said, “All of us came from very different places, some with a martial arts background and others with a break-dancing background and just used the skills we learnt to create a place where parkour can be taught correctly.”

He added, “We bring forth the functional use of the art of motion with great health benefits. Many people come to us with things like back problems and after a few weeks of training their injury has improved.”

The club teach their pupils through weekly workshops and foundation courses at George Lea Park in Sandton. They also hold challenges which test the skills of the students every quarter.

Davidson said, “What we offer is proper training with a comprehensive knowledge. The worst thing people could do is find a trainer who doesn’t know what they are doing.”

Endorsed by Parkour South Africa the Concrete Foundation Crew have taught people from all over how to use their bodies. Davidson said, “We help people learn the boundaries of their body, but also teach them how to break those boundaries.”
