Mashaba quits Free Market Foundation

BRYANSTON - Chairperson of the Free Market Foundation, Herman Mashaba has decided to join the Democratic Alliance as an ordinary card-carrying member.

He was stepping down from the foundation as he believed it would preserve the political neutrality of this important organisation.

“I have decided to give my support and commitment to helping the party to achieve power,” he said. “It is our best chance of delivering a better life for all in our lifetime.”

Mashaba hoped that his move would “unchain and inspire like-minded South Africans to take an active interest in the future of our country”. He believed we were living within a new democracy which allowed everyone to be “players”.

Mashaba was of the opinion that 20 years after democracy, unemployment was high, the economy was not performing, racism was rife, and corruption was deeply embedded in the public and private sectors.

He envisages taking part in a non-racial market economy which delivers on jobs, and has a more effective government dedicated to a “constructive partnership with business and a direct democracy where every politician is held personally accountable for their performance and behaviour”.

Executive director of the foundation, Leon Louw said, “Mashaba is a man of principle and it has been a great honour and privilege to have him as our chairperson.

“He has made an enormous contribution to the work of the foundation in this role and we will miss the boundless energy he brought to it. He will remain a proud member and supporter of the important work we are doing.”

Louw added very few people had Mashaba’s integrity, commitment and courage. “We wish him success in his deeply held desire to use his undoubted talents to the benefit of the country.”
