Flash mob highlights epilepsy

SANDTON - Bryneven Primary school pupil Maximilian van Heerden organised a flash mob to highlight awareness of epilepsy at Sandton City.

Van Heerden organised 30 of his friends from the German School, Mascon Karate Dojo, Bryneven Primary and Parkmore Cub Scouts and asked them to participate.

The team practised mimicking epileptic episodes as a flash mob to educate people of the severity of the condition..

The day of the event fell in the same week as Purple Day for Epilepsy. Van Heerden organised parents of the children participating in the flash mob to wear purple shirts.

“For every 1 000 people, 10 suffer with an epilepsy condition,” he said. “It is not contagious, you cannot swallow your tongue, and one is not possessed by evil spirits.”

“If you see a person having a seizure, please do not run away, call an ambulance and place the person in a recovery position and comfort them.”
