Vote for change

Patrick Mphuthi writes:

I refer to the back page article Parkrun launches, week ending 7 February.

I am overwhelmed by mixed emotions of sadness, disappointment and confusion.

One would not be blamed for thinking that a picture from some European country was mistakenly featured.

A picture can tell a thousand stories; it is either there are no black people living in Bryanston or either black people in Bryanston are couch potatoes who are not interested in sporting events. It could also suggest that transformation is moving at a snail’s pace and that economic disparities in our communities means that blacks are still not able to buy properties in affluent neighbourhood’s, many years into freedom and democracy.

One is hit in the face by reality that the deeply engraved and near irreparable damage caused by apartheid and oppression will take more than political parties to undo.

It’s about time South Africans took centre stage. Every picture of a rugby team, cricket team, church, school, business and every street should reflect the demographics of our society at large. It is the right thing. As we approach elections in South Africa, let’s do the right thing and vote for real change. Let’s reclaim our beloved country.

It is the only thing our children will inherit. Mayibuye iAfrika.
