Promoting healthy living and a balanced lifestyle

DIABETES Awareness Month was launched at the Woodmead Retail Park shopping centre.

The centre in partnership with the City of Johannesburg conducted screening for diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, HIV and prostate cancer. “As a build-up towards World Diabetes Day, the City of Johannesburg conducted health education on diabetes, screening for diabetes by checking blood sugar levels and blood pressure, cholesterol, weight checks and eye screening in all seven regions of the city,” said Monica Brits, Woodmead Retail Park manager. The city council also launched a Diabetes Support Group at the Wendywood Clinic.

“We want to create an awareness of healthy living through educating residents on the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle,” said health and social development councillor Nonceba Molwele. “You can prevent and control diabetes if you exercise and eat healthy.”

The day was filled with fun and excitement as the Soweto Marimba Youth League was invited to draw in the crowd and entertain them with music. Lebogang Legwale, marketing officer of Woodmead Retail Park said the day was a success and they were pleased by the turnout. Representatives of the City of Johannesburg and the companies that sponsored the day’s events were present to show their support.
