Four Sandton police officers arrested for corruption

Four officers from the Sandton Police Station were arrested, while on duty, in the early hours of 7 September for corruption.

In two separate incidents, members of the Germiston Organised Crime Unit, who were on an undercover operation to root out police corruption, were pulled over by the Sandton officers.

In both cases, the Sandton officers accused the undercover crime unit drivers of drunken driving, and solicited bribes in return for not arresting them.

The drivers paid the bribes, and then arrested the Sandton officers.

According to Captain Kym Cloete, spokesperson for the Sandton police, the four officers appeared in the Randburg Magistrates Court on 9 September.

“They appeared on charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice. Two were remanded in custody, while the other two were released on bail,” said Cloete.

Cloete confirmed that the undercover operation took place in areas of Sandton that have been identified as potential police corruption hotspots.

“We want the public to know that we do not take corruption lightly,” said Cloete.

The investigation is on-going and is being conducted by the Organised Crime Unit directly.
