Meet Lethabo Mkhonto a Varsity College student who paid her fees

Independent Institute of Education, Varsity Colleges' Alumna shares her journey as a Sports Development and Management graduate.

Lethabo Mkhonto, alumna of the Independent Institute of Education (IIE) Varsity College stands proud as she managed to pay her way through tertiary. She is an avid coach and sportswoman who is pursuing her passion for sports as her career path.

Mkhonto was a star soccer player who coached as a way to generate income to be able to help put herself through varsity. Lethabo has sat on various Sport Committee MANCO Teams and helped curate and organize various events for sports students.

When asked what a normal day looks like for her, she said that she was constantly busy with lectures and sports committee meetings. Where she has to brainstorm, curate and plan student campus events in the mornings.

According to Mkhonto, straight after lectures, as a member of the sports committee on campus, she’s involved with planning and managing sports events such as the Annual Sports Awards, and Intercampus events.

“I found myself going straight to coaching the Crawford International College Rugby and Preparatory Girls Soccer teams. Then moving on to my soccer or touch rugby training in the afternoon into the evening. Arriving home very late to relax for an hour and then start working through assignments until 1 am. It was a lot to handle but, in the end, it was all worth the sacrifice,” said Mkhonto.

Mkhonto is currently training hoping to make the South African team for the 2024 Touch Rugby World Cup that will take place in England. She is training hard with the IIE’s Varsity College Ladies’ Football team (VCFC) to win the RCLFA soccer league.

Mkhonto has declared this year a year to focus on her mental health and take a break from her studies. In 2024 she aims to start studying towards a degree in sports science and management, which will allow her to explore various careers such as sports physiotherapy or even venturing into biokinetics.
